Why it is important to know your Target Customers and how to get to know them?

07/01/2024

One of the key things for any brand is to define the target audience, that means who your target customers are. This is important not only for the success of the brand, but also for the success of the company. Everything depends on knowing your target audience: what you will communicate, in what form, in what marketing channels, with whom, etc. This determines the brand's marketing strategy, the focus and communication of the brand, the choice of marketing channels, the form of text and graphics, but also the products or services you offer, etc. Today I'm going to share with you some tips and advice on why it is important to know your target audience and how to define them the right way.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW YOUR TARGET CUSTOMERS?

  • Knowing your target customers is the key to success for any brand. When you know your customers, you can better understand their needs, wants and expectations. This allows you to tailor a product offering - i.e. exactly what your customers need or want.

  • You can better prepare your communication message to your customers' needs and wants and choose your marketing channels more effectively.

  • When you know who you're targeting, you don't waste your budget. As a concrete example to give you a better idea, if you have a limited budget and target the whole country and all inhabitants - you won't reach anyone properly. Just because someone sees your ad once doesn't mean they actually noticed it or even buy your product... Every day we are all spread with advertising from morning to night - on our mobile phones, on TV, in newspapers and magazines, in outdoor advertising, etc. The chances of your ad catching the eye of people for a few seconds are unfortunately minimal.

  • Communication focused on the right target audience will allow you to create stronger and more lasting relationships with your customers. By knowing them better, you can respond more effectively to their requirements and prepare for their future needs. It will also allow you to identify new opportunities for further brand growth.

HOW TO FIND OUT WHO YOUR TARGET CUSTOMERS ARE?

Getting to know your target customers is not a simple process. It takes time, resources and a deep understanding of the market. The situation is a little different for a brand that has been on the market for a short time vs one that has been on the market for a long time, because it already has more data and can more easily find out who is buying its products.

Whether you are in one group or the other, the first step should be a more detailed analysis of your current customers. Who are your current customers? What are their wants and needs? What motivates them to buy? What are their buying habits?

Don't be afraid to ask your customers questions to find out what they like about your brand, why, etc. Through these interactions, you can gain valuable insights into what customers want, what they like or dislike, what their expectations are, etc.

Another way is by tracking online customer behaviour, f.e. analysing data from the web, social media or email campaigns, which can provide deep insights into how customers interact with products, how they behave on the web, etc.

A great tool is to work with personas - fictional people who represent your customers. It is a great tool to better imagine your customers via personas. Then you are better able to create a strategy and key message.

FIRST ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN AS DETAILED A WAY AS POSSIBLE:

  • Are your customers more women or men?

  • Do they live in the city or in the countryside?

  • In which part of the Czech Republic / Slovakia do they live?

  • How old are they?

  • Are they single, or do they have a family and children?

  • What is their approximate job? (You don't need to know exactly that they work as a manager from such and such company, but by knowing approximately what type of work they do, you will be able to make an income group assignment. This is also important for a brand to know what income group they are targeting. The strategy looks different with cheaper products and different with premium products.)

  • Any other details are also important as they will help you to better understand your key customers. After all, the better you can get a sense of your customers, the better.

After answering all these questions, you will create a profile of your ideal customer and then you can prepare your marketing strategy and communication accordingly.
